From The President's Desk

What an eventful year it has been! First and foremost, my thoughts go out to our SCAND members and their families who may have been impacted by the unpredictable weather we have experienced.

It was wonderful seeing many of you at the Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE) in Nashville earlier this month! Over 25 South Carolina Dietitians attended FNCE, with members present at the House of Delegates meeting and reimbursement training. Members also met with AND Public Policy and Foundation leaders, and shared their expertise during the poster sessions. Hopefully, South Carolina will have a strong representation at FNCE in Boston next October!

The SCAND board has been working on a variety of project this fall. Our Immediate Past-President, Charlotte Caperton-Kilburn, and our policy committee have connected with state agencies to get further information on how SC dietitians can proceed with Therapeutic Diet Order writing. Our next steps are to contact hospital Clinical Nutrition Managers in the state to determine the scope of current practice. Expect communication from Charlotte or myself in the near future.

A number of action alerts are open and require YOUR attention! South Carolina is beating the national average on the following alerts:

  • Reauthorize Strong Child Nutrition Programs- 8.3% (national average 4.9%)
  • Treat and Reduce Obesity Act- 14.5% (national average 6.9%)

Preventing Diabetes in Medicare Act- 14.6% (national average 8.1%)

Remember, one alert must be completed for each of the legislative issues. The process is quick and simple. Please take a few minutes to make your voice heard if you haven’t already.

Our Annual Meeting is scheduled for May 4th and 5th, 2016 in Columbia! The Annual Meeting committee is in the process of lining up excellent speakers based on your requests from Academy DPGs and state experts. Please save the date!

It’s the time of the year when we begin looking for members to serve on the SCAND board. This year the following elected positions are open: President- Elect, Treasurer, and Delegate. We will also have some committee positions available. Please contact eatrightsc@capconsc.com if you are interested in running for a position.

Finally, Food Day is coming up on Saturday, October 24th. Dietitians will be hosting cooking demonstrations at Farmer’s Markets across the state. Visit our Facebook page for more information. Stop by to support our members and show that SC dietitians are about “eating real!”
