Public Policy Workshop 2012
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics hosted more than 350 members from all 50 states from April 15 to 17 at the Academy's 2012 Public Policy Workshop in Arlington, VA. USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack gave a powerful address making it clear that the time is now for Registered Dietitians to make our greatest impact on food, nutrition and health.
The Legislative and Public Policy Committee outlined the Academy's policy priorities and experts spoke on marketing of food to children, the Farm Bill, childhood obesity and the U.S. government's Let's Move! Initiative.
PPW 2012 offered valuable professional development and educational opportunities, both for experienced advocates and novices in public policy outreach. The inspiring weekend concluded with Academy members visiting their Congressional Representatives and Senators on Capitol Hill.
The South Carolina Dietetic Association (South Carolina Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) was represented by 4 RDs who attended the workshop- Sodexo Registered Dietitian Katherine Nashatker, MS, RD, LD and South Carolina Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Board members Nina Crowley, (President Elect), Vivian Haley-Zitlin (Public Policy Coordinator), and Sandra McMillan (Public Policy Coordinator-elect). The team of RDs discussed important bills that are currently or upcoming in congress such as the Older American’s Act, the Farm Bill, Preventing Diabetes in Medicare Act, and Preserving Access to Life-Saving Medication Act.
After making these important connections, the South Carolina Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Public Policy Panel will be working throughout the year to maintain the relationship and serve as nutrition experts when the lawmakers need advise on nutrition policy issues. In the spring of each year the South Carolina Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics hosts a Legislative Day with similar priorities at the state level in Columbia.
